How to determine if you have a hive or swarm. This will help those who are not really sure if they have a bee hive or swarm. HIVES: Usually if you have a hive that has established itself in a structure you will notice a pattern of bees returning to a consistent place. You may think that there needs to be many bees to show that there is hive going on, but that is not necessarily the truth it may be only a few bees at a time or there could be quite a few bees. The truth is that the majority of the bees STAY inside the hive producing honey, comb, and wax along with tending to the new bees. Having bees that you can see going into a structure and or coming out of a structure is a good indicator that you have a hive. SWARMS: Swarms are really noticeable, you will see a BUNCH of bees that are all clustered together in a rough circular shape and they will fly together in that pattern. They do this while they are sending scouts out to find a new home for themselves. If you see one of these on or near your property you will want to contact us ASAP. This will prevent it from becoming a full fledged hive in your home. Please see the pictures in the next column for examples of what the signs are. If in doubt contact us we can walk you through making the determination or we can come out to determine if they are bees for you.

, This is the first signs that you have hive in your home.
Look closely the yellowish, black specs you see are the bees going out of the hive. Underneath, this is the hive they were going back to. This hive is nearly 1-1 1/2ft tall. This took the bees around a month for them to do. This is a stereo typical swarm in a tree. Look really close, they are right in the middle and are in a tight ball. |
